Why can’t ‘Uncle Bob’ video record my wedding?

So you’re planning for your big day and you’ve gone over every last detail.  Check, check, check… and as you look over the budget you are looking to see where you can trim off extra costs.  In today’s economic climate it’s a reasonable expectation to be thrifty.  So you ask yourself, “Why can’t ‘Uncle Bob’ or my best friend record the wedding?”  Well, taken at face value the answer is yes, a family member or friend can do this for you.  The real question is:  Will the finished product be something you will be happy with at your 50th Anniversary?

Yes, it’s true that video equipment and its technology have come along way allowing for the average person to make really cool home videos.  But what good is the technology if it’s not used applicably and you end up with nothing more than a home video of your special day?  The wedding day is a capture, (a time capsule) of not just the guest, the dress, the cake… it’s a capture of the feelings and memories too.  Everyone has a favorite movie and each time they go back to see that favorite movie they remember the feelings that made them like it in the first place.  Professional videographers do more than record the events.  They tie in all of the nervousness, giggles, tears and cheers on that special day.  Your wedding video should be a showcase of the couple’s family, friends, and the love that brought each of you together.   A professional videographer won’t make you dizzy watching the video, won’t have odd gaps of dead time, won’t have audio that cannot be understood, won’t have music that you don’t like… you get the point.  A professional videographer is someone that can be hired and can be fired, unlike a friend or family member.  You get to call the shots and lay down the expectations upfront. (Besides, let all of your friends and family members be on the other side of the camera to enjoy the special day with you.)

It’s my personal opinion to have a wedding consultant help you find the right person, after all do you have the extra time?  They can help save you time on the foot work and they do know who does good work and who doesn’t.  Be honest about your budget, let everyone know your expectations, relax and remember after the big day you have one more personal present to open… your wedding video.
